Our Story

Designed by World Bicycle Relief, the Buffalo Bicycle isn’t your typical bike. While most of the world’s bicycles are lightweight, complex and made for recreation, we designed the Buffalo to serve the needs of people who travel long distances over rugged terrain with heavy cargo. Our collaboration with industry leaders reflects a commitment to creating a stronger, simpler, and sustainable bicycle that can withstand harsh rural conditions. Coupled with the rider, the Buffalo Bicycle is a fierce force for change.

Value Addition

Mechanics Training – Field Mechanics keep the bikes rolling

Mechanics training is done in Harare and Bulawayo – We normally recommend 1 mechanic per 100 bicycles in any one surrounding area dependent on radius. This fee includes 6 days certified intensive training, work-suit, spanner set and costs US$400 for the 6 day duration which amount includes:

The training includes the full assembly of a bicycle from a completely knocked down kit.Whilst accommodation and meals arrangements are left entirely with clients, we can facilitate this for US$800 per person for the entirety of the training week.

Buffalo Bicycles offers a range of low-cost, high-impact programming that starts with our specially designed heavy-duty bicycle, but extends to community-led, sustainable programming, measurement and evaluation services, and technical advisory services. All programming is designed to seamlessly integrate with our partners’ planned or existing activities to amplify their impact. We measure our impact not in bicycles sold but in lives transformed and partners’ progress accelerated.

Sustainable Programming

Our Buffalo Bicycles come with a five year warranty on the fork, frame and carrier . (We have however seen through the number of years we have been in various programmes that may of the parts have lasted a number of years before being replaced). Our community-led programming is designed to ensure that our bicycles remain on the road, serving the community for many years to come. Buffalo Bicycles collaborates with communities and partners to develop low-cost, gender-responsive, and sustainable programming capable of addressing local needs. The process is iterative and led and managed by communities and partners. The end result is a community-led, market-based ecosystem that places each Buffalo Bicycle strategically, where it will have the greatest impact on the community and keeps each bicycle in the service of the community over the long-term.

Our in-country product development teams oversee a fleet of riders who test current and potential components under the most punishing field conditions.

Maintenance

Buffalo Bicycles are compatible with locally available spare parts. We also train Field Mechanics to service bikes. For large purchases we recommend field mechanic training to ensure your business or community is equipped with skilled mechanics to service and maintain your Buffalo. With proper care and maintenance, this durable bike will serve you for years.
