For over a decade, Bhekani has been on the front lines of wildlife conservation, striving to protect animals from poachers, preserve natural habitats, and foster awareness about environmental stewardship among local communities. His daily responsibilities include monitoring wildlife movements, documenting habitat changes, and addressing human-wildlife conflict (HWC) incidents.

“The journey hasn’t been easy. I patrolled wide and rough terrains entirely on foot. Responding swiftly to threats like poaching or HWC incidents was a wearisome task. The long distances and uneven landscape often hindered my ability to respond on time, putting both wildlife and communities at risk.

This changed when I received a Buffalo bicycle through the Mobilized Communities Program. This strong bicycle dramatically changed the way I work and my life in general.”

With the bicycle, Bhekani is making good memories and explains how his working life has changed and how much he now enjoys going out to work and, on his Buffalo bicycle, ensure better intervention of the human/wildlife conflict. 

“I normally cover a distance of up to 20 kilometres daily, patrolling efficiently and silently.  This silent operation has become a game-changer, enabling me to approach poachers undetected and monitor wildlife more effectively.  Since acquiring the bicycle, I have witnessed a noticeable drop in poaching incidents. I can safely attribute this success to the improved mobility and enhanced response times.” 

The impact of the bicycle extends beyond his conservation duties. “It has reduced my transportation costs by 80% and made accessing water and collecting firewood so much easier. The water source is 2 kilometres away, and now I can bring back what I need quickly and efficiently,” he shares. 

Bhekani’s story is evidence of how something as simple as a bicycle can make a massive difference to an individual and the community.  In the Woodlands Community, the Buffalo Bicycle is not just a tool for mobility; it’s a catalyst for life change. By empowering game scouts like Bhekani, it strengthens wildlife protection efforts and enriches the daily lives of those dedicated to safeguarding nature.
