Our Stories – I am Zimbabwe Trust Recipients

Background

In 2023, a benefactor decided to give the gift of mobility to a needy child within one of the local urban areas.  I am Zimbabwe Trust was chosen as the home of choice due to the nature of its work.  The first bicycle recipient was Millicent, whose mother left her at 9 months old and never returned.

The donated bicycle has been a game-changer for Millicent.  Millicent used to walk 40 minutes to and from school. With the bicycle, that time has been reduced to 15 minutes either way and also ensuring her safety as a girl child. Her attendance is now regular and she has also regularly attended netball practice sessions without watching her clock.

The donated bicycle has brought numerous benefits to Millicent and her family, including:

  • Attending school regularly, which has improved her academic performance by 5% and overall well-being.
  • The bicycle has reduced Millicent’s exposure to potential safety risks associated with walking long distances, especially during early morning and late evening hours, extending the peace of mind to her grandmother
  • With the gift of the bicycle, Millicent has gained overall self confidence and independence which has positively impacted her self-esteem and overall well-being.

This year, 2024, Delight Kadigo is the recipient of this gifting

Delight, a resilient bright 13-year-old in grade 5 faces life’s challenges, lot knowing his father and having tragically lost his mother in 2020.

He is presently living with his grand mother, who, in to make ends meet, sells fruit at Mbare Musika in Harare.

The gift of the bicycle will ease Delight’s daily commute to school and give him independence and hope for a brighter future
