Our Stories – No Barriers

For many students in rural Zimbabwe, a bicycle is more than just transport—it’s the key to education. A Buffalo Bike can cut a student’s commute by 75%, increase school attendance by 28%, and improve academic performance by 59%.

This year, we aim to provide 120 bikes, and we need your help!

How Bikes Change Lives – Eddie’s Story Most of us have various means of transport and choose to ride bikes for enjoyment, to stay active, or for fitness. However, for students in rural Zimbabwe, having a bike can be a game changer.

October 2024 During my recent visit to the two schools supported by No Barriers Education Foundation, I saw first-hand the impact that bicycles have on students’ lives. In Australia, a 10km journey is something we might do as part of training or a weekend ride. But in Zimbabwe, many students walk 10km or more each way just to get to school. This means hours spent on the road daily, leaving them exhausted before they even reach class.

With a bicycle:
Students arrive on time and ready to learn
Attendance and academic performance improve
They spend more time at home and in school instead of walking for hours

I was privileged to ride alongside students and experience their joy and excitement firsthand. Seeing the pride in their eyes as they gained a sense of independence was truly heart-warming. Each bike that we can provide has a massive impact on students and their families.

The Buffalo bikes we provide, at AUD $300 per bike (delivered to the schools), are designed for durability, require minimal maintenance, and are built for tough terrain. I encourage you to participate in the NoBarriers ‘Ride for Bikes – 2025’ cycling fundraiser on Sunday, 6th April and help us raise funds to purchase bikes for this year’s distribution. Our target is 120 bikes—and every contribution helps! If you’re unable to ride on the day, please consider a donation. Together, we can make a difference.

Enjoy the ride,
Eddie Sandrini, NoBarriers Director & Bicycle Ambassador
